May 16, 1975, marked a historic moment as Junko Tabei became the first woman to summit Mount Everest (8,848 meters / 29,029 feet). Part of the pioneering Japanese Women’s Everest Expedition—a team of 15 diverse Japanese women—Tabei’s achievement defied the prevailing belief that “women can’t climb Everest.” Against social prejudice, fundraising challenges, and unexpected setbacks, the team’s unity, grit, and courage made the impossible a reality. Notably, only seven expeditions worldwide had successfully reached the top of Everest prior to their achievement.
About the Film
This documentary combines rare footage shot during the 1975 expedition with interviews filmed in 2014–2015 with Junko Tabei, fellow expedition members, sherpas who supported the climb and some expert opinions. It was initiated by a New York based Japanese female production company, with the aim of sharing this groundbreaking achievement with audiences worldwide. In honor of the 50th anniversary of the historic ascent as well as for the Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, it will be screened for free.
